Technology: IOLMaster 700

Excellent visual outcome from cataract surgery depends on a number of factors.  Major amongst these is the ability to measure the eye accurately prior to surgery.  Routine cataract surgery involves removal of the cataract (a cataract is a cloudy lens – the eye has a natural lens, very similar to a camera) and replacement of the natural lens with an artificial plastic lens called an intra-ocular lens (IOL).  Choice of the correct replacement lens power is crucial to success.  The correct lens can only be chosen if the measurements of the eye are accurate before surgery.  The German optical company Carl Zeiss Meditec have been leaders in this field for some time with their device called the IOLMaster.

Both Dr Andersons and A/Prof Goggin are always on the lookout for ways to enhance their surgery and so Ashford Advanced Eye Care have recently upgraded their IOLMaster device to the new IOLMaster 700.  This adds new diagnostic features and assessments of accuracy with the addition of an optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurement and improved measurement of the cornea.  The measurements do not take any longer for the patient but have advanced capability for success particularly for more advanced intra-ocular lens designs such as those that correct astigmatism and those that provide both distance and near vision.
