Astigmatism is a failure of focus of the eye which occurs when the focusing surfaces in the eye are oval instead of spherical (similar to the difference in shape between an Australian rules football and a soccer ball). A/Prof Michael Goggin has had a long term interest in astigmatism, its measurement and surgery to reduce or eliminate it. He has taught these techniques in Australia to practicing surgeons and surgical trainees and at many overseas research forums. Recently, along with his co-authors, he has published a method of improving outcome from this kind of surgery, when combined with cataract surgery, in the Journal of Refractive Surgery. This is an international, peer-reviewed, quality controlled research Journal. His “Adelaide Nomogram”, as this technique has come to be known, has drawn interest from surgeons both in Australia and overseas.
