Understanding Cataracts
A cataract is clouding of the natural lens of the eye. The eye has a natural lens, similar to a camera lens, that focuses light onto the retina at the back of the eye.
When this clouding interferes with vision, the natural lens can be replaced during surgery with an artificial lens (called an intraocular lens or IOL). This lens is placed permanently inside the eye where the natural lens used to be, requiring no ongoing care to maintain clear vision.
-
Permanent Solution
The artificial lens is placed inside your eye permanently with no ongoing maintenance required -
Common Condition
Cataracts are often present in both eyes and typically develop with age -
Highly Successful
Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful procedures performed worldwide
Causes and Risk Factors
Understanding what causes cataracts and who is at greater risk
Age-Related
Cataracts are most commonly associated with aging, typically developing gradually over time as part of the natural aging process
Injury or Trauma
Cataracts can develop following eye injury or trauma, sometimes appearing years after the initial incident
Long-Term Inflammation
Chronic inflammation within the eye can accelerate cataract development over time
Diabetes
Cataracts are more common among people with diabetes, often developing at an earlier age
Medication Side Effects
Long-term use of certain medications, particularly steroids like prednisolone, can increase cataract risk
UV Exposure
Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light may contribute to cataract formation over time

Advanced Intraocular Lens Options
Choose the lens that best suits your lifestyle and vision needs
Standard Intraocular
Lenses
Standard IOLs provide excellent distance vision correction and are suitable for most patients. These lenses effectively replace the clouded natural lens, restoring clear vision.
Best for: Patients seeking clear distance vision with reading glasses for near tasks
Astigmatism-Correcting Lenses (Toric IOLs)
Astigmatism occurs when the surfaces that focus light in the eye are oval instead of spherical, causing blurred vision. Toric IOLS correct this irregularity, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses to address astigmatism.
Best for: Patients with astigmatism who want clearer vision without corrective lenses
Presbyopia-Correcting Lenses (Multifocal/Extended Depth of Focus)
As we age, our eyes naturally lose the ability to focus on near objects (presbyopia), typically becoming noticeable in our 40s. Modern multifocal and extended depth of focus IOLs can correct this problem, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for reading glasses.
Best for: Active patients who want vision freedom at multiple distances. Your eye surgeon will discuss your suitability during consultation.
Which Lens is Right for You?
Dr. Goggin will thoroughly assess your eyes, lifestyle needs, and visual goals during your consultation to recommend the most appropriate lens option. Each patient’s needs are unique, and the choice of lens depends on factors including your prescription, eye health, daily activities, and personal preferences.
Micro-Incision
Cataract Surgery
At Ashford Advanced Eye Care, we use advanced micro-incision techniques to perform cataract surgery through incisions as small as 1.8mm. This minimally invasive approach offers significant advantages over traditional methods.
The cloudy natural lens is gently removed and replaced with your chosen artificial lens through these tiny incisions, which are so small they typically require no stitches.
-
Minimal Incision Size
Incisions as small as 1.8mm reduce trauma and promote faster healing
-
No Stitches Required
The tiny incisions self-seal naturally without the need for sutures
-
Ideal for Astigmatism Correction
Particularly beneficial for patients receiving toric (astigmatism-correcting) lenses
