Clear Lens Extraction
Some people may not be suitable for laser vision correction because their long or short-sightedness is too extreme. Surgery to reduce or eliminate the need for spectacles is still possible even if not by laser. Inside every eye is a natural lens that can be replaced with an artificial lens. The right choice of this artificial lens will provide the kind of vision not achievable with laser for these extreme eyes. This is known as “clear lens extraction and insertion of an intraocular lens” or “refractive lens exchange”. It is called “clear lens extraction” to distinguish it from cataract surgery which is very similar but done when a cataract has developed. Cataract is clouding of the natural lens.
